Implementing a breathwork routine can act as an effective boundary marker, offering a moment of transition that signals the mind and body to leave professional concerns behind and embrace the personal realm. Here's an accessible exercise that takes just 8 minutes, which you can perform in your car or a quiet space before shifting from your professional to personal environment. This practice not only aids in mental decompression but also serves as a critical step in safeguarding your wellness, ensuring that you bring the best version of yourself home, not just the remnants of a day's toil.

By fostering an environment that values and facilitates this reconnection, society can begin to bridge the gap between the idealised images of health care professionals and the realities they face, ensuring that they are seen, supported, and valued not just for the roles they fulfil but for the individuals they are.


B. The Crushing Awareness That I Am Not Like Those Around Me

The perception of health care professionals as infallible, omnipotent healers is a double-edged sword. On one side, it elevates the profession, imbuing it with respect and admiration. On the other, it creates an unrealistic, psychologically burdensome standard. A study published in Frontiers in Public Health highlights the urgent need to prioritise the mental health and wellbeing of healthcare workers, pointing out the negative impact of job-related stress, moral conflicts, and perceived job security on their professionalism and quality of care delivery (Frontiers in Public Health, 2021).


Moreover, the illusion of the health care professional as a "glamorous healer" can lead to a profound sense of isolation and the crushing awareness of not being like those around them. This discrepancy between perception and reality can exacerbate feelings of imposter syndrome, where, despite evident success and competence, individuals doubt their abilities and fear being exposed as frauds. The social psychological perspective on mental health suggests that such dissonance between self-perception and external expectations can significantly affect mental wellbeing (Psycnet, 1988).


C. Discussing the Reality Behind the Glamour: Years of Study, Sacrifices, and Hard Work

In the groundbreaking study "A scoping review on the relationship between mental wellbeing and medical professionalism," published in the NIH, researchers embark on an insightful journey to untangle the intricate web linking mental wellbeing with medical professionalism attributes in undergraduate medical education. The findings of this comprehensive scoping review reveal a nuanced landscape where mental wellbeing and medical professionalism are deeply intertwined. Under the magnifying glass, six subthemes related to mental wellbeing emerged: burnout, stress, depression, disappointment, depersonalisation, and conscientiousness. Each of these facets offers a unique lens through which to view the challenges faced by medical students, highlighting the pervasive nature of mental wellbeing issues within this demographic.


Conversely, the exploration of medical professionalism unearthed five subthemes: empathy, academic performance, compassion, unprofessional behaviour, and professionalism itself.
